Classic Brownstones, ready for their close up!
After kicking off our Homes We Love mini-series with a peek at some amazing French pied-à-terre getaways, A Life Designed now takes a leisurely stroll down leafy lanes as we tour a style of residence that has been romanticized in movies, written up in numerous interior design magazines and coveted by many... The classic Brownstone.
It is nearly impossible to list the number of movies that have used the Brownstone as a backdrop over the years and with good reason, these beautiful homes ooze historical character and charm, harkening back to a slower, gentler time. Although many people think of Brownstones and immediately connect them to New York, they are not unique to NYC. You can find them in several of the large, older cities of the US...such as Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, etc.
Still, for many folk, the classic walk-up Brownstone will always be New York and they can be found in numerous areas of the city, especially in the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Park Slope, Clinton Hill, Cobble Hill, Prospect Heights, Brooklyn Heights, and Bedford Stuyvesant. The Manhattan neighborhood of the Upper West Side, too, retains many Brownstones. As can be expected, New York City Brownstones are highly desired, and usually cost several million dollars to purchase. Ouch!
Regardless of their address, we love these charming beauties and could easily imagine ourselves sitting on the stoop, watching the world pass by and writing and starring in our own romantic movie.
